Color Papers

Right Image: Minolta Maxxum 9, Tokina 80-200mm f-2.8 ATX lens, extension tube, Fuji Velvia 50, Bogen tripod and pan/tilt head.  Multi-segment metering, 1/60 sec at f-8, manual exposure mode and manual focus.

Color papers are made for printing from color negatives (negative/positive) and slides (positive/positive). You have
two choices of paper for color slides, reversal (Kodak, Fuji, and other brands) or silver dye-bleach (Ilfochrome, formerly known
as Cibachrome). Since color slides are brighter and more contrasty than color negatives, reversal papers are made with much lower in contrast than negative/positive papers. Avoid
very contrasty images when using reversal papers. Too much contrast may be outside the range of these papers. Reversal papers use more processing steps and can take up to 20 min. Exposure is also very critical. Silver dye-bleach is totally different from reversal paper. With reversal type processing, the colored dyes are formed chemically. The color dyes are already present
in the paper with silver dye-bleach processing. This allows richer and more permanent colors. The presence of dyes also produce sharper and more detail prints than reversal type papers, but exposure takes much longer. Processing takes about 12 min. Silver dye-bleach is the most expensive process, and glossy prints are very delicate and are easily scratched. These papers are more tolerant of exposure and produce richer and sharper images than either negative/positive or reversal. Printing from color negatives is the cheapest way to make prints. It is best to use your own film manufacturers brand of paper. Manufacturers produce their papers to match their own films. It is possible to use different brands of film and paper. Test different combinations and decide if you like the results. Processing takes about ten minutes and is very simple. Temperature is very critical with this type of process. There are several kits available for making negative/positive prints. Compared to positive/positive process, accessing color negatives are very difficult until they are printed.
