Nikon's 80-400 millimeter high-power zoom lens features an innovative Vibration Reduction (VR) system that allows handheld super-telephoto shooting at dusk, at night, and even in poorly lit rooms. The VR operation works with Nikon F4, F100, N80, N65, and D1 cameras.

Two VR modes are available:
  • VR for both the viewfinder image and the image plane: Moderate VR operation is activated, ensuring viewing comfort for the viewfinder image.
  • VR for the image plane only: Reduces the possibility of viewfinder-induced eyestrain and conserves battery power.
Other features include:
  • Use of VR function is equivalent to using a shutter speed three f-stops faster.
  • VR is automatically detected during panning operation.
  • New optical design using 3 ED glass elements and a 9-bladed diaphragm for high resolution and high contrast, even at maximum apertures.
  • Built-in A/M switch enables instant switching from autofocus to manual focus.
  • Filter does not rotate during zooming.
